Their products are already gracing shelves in the US, France, and Germany, a success story built on hard work and dedication. However, this success story faces a potential dark turn due to the threat of hydrocarbon extraction in the region.

Organic Certification at Risk

"We're in these mountains because we want to make a premium product," says Eleni, a co-founder of Nomad Honey. Organic certification mandates that producers maintain a distance from cities, major roads, and any potential sources of pesticide contamination. Hydrocarbon extraction would violate this requirement, forcing Nomad Honey to relocate their beehives and potentially jeopardize their entire operation.

Eleni's statement underscores the critical link between environmental health and the production of high-quality organic goods. Nomad Honey's story highlights the challenges faced by small, family-run producers striving for sustainability and excellence.

Beyond Hydrocarbon Extraction: The Struggle of Small Producers

Even without the threat of drilling, Eleni and Vassilis, the other co-founder, acknowledge the numerous hurdles faced by small producers in Epirus. Securing a fair price for their premium honey, despite its exceptional quality, can be a constant battle. The process of production, packaging, branding, marketing, certification, navigating bureaucracy, and dealing with taxes all consume a significant amount of time and resources, leaving little profit at the end of the day.

A Call for a Sustainable Future

Eleni and Vassilis advocate for a fundamental shift in mindset. They believe a two-pronged approach is necessary: reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and fostering a more sustainable economic system that empowers small producers. They emphasize the importance of consuming less but opting for high-quality, natural products sourced directly from local farmers and producers. Additionally, they urge further exploration of solar energy as a viable alternative to oil.

By supporting local producers like Nomad Honey and embracing sustainable practices, consumers can play a vital role in protecting the environment and ensuring the continued success of these small businesses that provide us with exceptional products.
urn:store:6:blog:post:119https://www.elenianna.co.uk/unleash-your-uniqueness-personalized-mugs-that-make-a-statementUnleash Your Uniqueness: Personalized Mugs that Make a Statement
Tired of boring, mass-produced mugs? Yearning for a coffee companion that reflects your true personality? Look no further than personalized mugs, the customizable canvas for your creativity! In ancient Greece, this dish was a simple combination of locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the abundance of the region's agricultural produce. It was primarily consumed by farmers and shepherds as a filling and nutritious meal during long working hours. Over time, the Greek Salad gained popularity among all social classes and became an integral part of Greek cuisine.

Ingredients and Preparation

A true Greek Salad is a refreshing ensemble of vibrant colors, flavors, and textures. The key ingredients include fresh tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, tangy onions, succulent olives, and creamy feta cheese. These primary components are typically accompanied by aromatic herbs like oregano and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, which adds a distinctive Mediterranean touch to the dish. The salad is best enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of sea salt.

To prepare the Greek Salad, start by washing and chopping the vegetables into bite-sized pieces. The tomatoes should be ripe and juicy, while the cucumbers should have a firm and crunchy texture. Next, thinly slice the onions and drain the olives to remove excess salt. Finally, crumble the feta cheese over the salad and add a generous amount of olive oil and a pinch of dried oregano. Toss all the ingredients together gently and let them marinate for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Health Benefits of Greek Salad

Beyond its irresistible taste, Greek Salad offers numerous health benefits that make it a wise dietary choice. Firstly, it is low in calories and high in fiber, making it an excellent option for weight management. The abundance of fresh vegetables ensures a good intake of essential vitamins and minerals, while the olives and olive oil provide heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Furthermore, the feta cheese offers a good source of protein and calcium. The combination of these nutrient-rich ingredients contributes to improved digestion, enhanced immunity, and overall well-being.

The Importance of Fresh and Local Ingredients

To truly savor the authentic flavors of a Greek Salad, it is crucial to prioritize the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This ensures optimal taste and nutritional value while supporting sustainable agricultural practices. By choosing organic produce, you can minimize exposure to pesticides and contribute to a healthier environment. Additionally, purchasing from local farmers fosters community development and helps preserve traditional, artisanal methods of food cultivation.

Conclusion

Greek Salad, with its rich history and mouthwatering flavors, has successfully made its mark in the culinary world. With over 7,000 different types of bees and an abundance of flowering plants, Greek honey is a unique and flavorful addition to any kitchen. But, what makes Greek honey so special? And, how can this golden elixir benefit your health and well-being? Let's dive in!

Pure and Raw Greek Honey

Greek honey is often sought after for its pure, raw form. Unlike processed honey, raw honey is unpasteurized and unfiltered, meaning it retains all of its natural enzymes and nutrients. This makes Greek raw honey an excellent option for those looking for a natural sweetener that can offer a wide range of health benefits, including improved digestion, boosted immune system, and increased energy levels.

Organic Greek Honey

In addition to being raw, Greek honey also comes in organic varieties. Organic honey is produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, making it a healthier option for both bees and humans. Organic Greek honey can be found in different forms, from honeycomb to liquid varieties, all offering the same unbeatable flavor and nutritional value.

Honey for Health

Honey, including Greek honey, is renowned for its many health benefits. One of the most talked-about benefits is its use in treating allergies. Studies have found that consuming local honey can help reduce allergy symptoms by acting as a natural antihistamine. Additionally, honey has been used for centuries to help soothe coughs and sore throats and can be an excellent remedy for skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Greek Honey Varieties

Greek honey is available in a variety of types, each with its unique flavor and medicinal properties. Some of the most popular Greek honey types include:

- Thyme honey: A dark-colored honey with a strong, herbal flavor, perfect for savory dishes and rich desserts.
- Pine honey: Made from the sap of pine trees, this potent honey has a deep amber color and a sweet, woody taste. Pine honey is excellent for respiratory health and is often used to soothe coughs and colds.
- Wildflower honey: This light-colored honey is made from the nectar of various flowers, offering a subtle, floral flavor that pairs well with tea, toast, and yogurt.

Greek Honey Recipes

There are countless ways to incorporate Greek honey into your diet, from simple honey and toast to decadent desserts. Here are a few recipes to get you started:

- Greek Yogurt with Honey and Walnuts: A classic Mediterranean breakfast dish, this recipe only takes a few minutes to prepare but is packed with protein, healthy fats, and nutrients. It is harvested in our own organic apiaries, from the black firs of Mount Mainalon in Arcadia - which reaches a height of 1500m. It is a renowned product for its taste and low sugar concentration. It is light in color, a shade between pearl and vanilla. We gave it its first name because of its vanilla-like color, but in no way does it imply vanilla in any form.

From Mount Mainalon, in Arcadia, Greece

At a height of >1,500m

Mainalon is the tallest mountain in the Mainalon highlands of the Peloponnese, located in Arcadia, Greece. The most important meal of the day in terms of nutrition, it was also the most filling. In western Crete, country people used to eat the traditional Greek breakfast of eggs with staka – the equivalent of clotted cream – to keep them going, while in Epirus and Macedonia, the fare was pies made with cheese and butter.

A generous piece of homemade bread with some olives, wrapped in a clean kerchief, was the midmorning snack of choice. Farmers and day laborers would carry it with them to the fields or workplaces in town. Breakfast as we know it today did not exist, except in some city homes, where it was a habit imported from abroad with French butter and white bread.

Modern Variations of Greek Breakfast
Today, having rediscovered the wealth of the Greek diet and the luxury of freshly picked produce and genuine, home-made dishes, breakfast has changed for modern Greeks too. At hotel buffets, which are constantly reinventing themselves, you will enjoy a wake-up meal with a difference.

Will you be able to choose between Epirot pies, with a handmade pastry filled with seasonal goodies, a milk pie, cheese pie, spinach pie, a wedge of a delicious island or mountain cheese or a bowl of the creamiest yogurt you’ve ever tasted, perhaps even made with buffalo milk.

A classic choice, yogurt is such an important part of the Greek diet. Typically it can be consumed with a bit of starch in the morning such as a piece of bread or a rusk. Or you can add a touch of yogurt, walnuts and some seasonal fruit. This is a filling breakfast and offers a good amount of protein as well.

Loukoumades (Greek donuts)
They are one of the most delectable desserts. Loukoumades are delicious dough balls fried in hot oil, crunchy on the outside and fluffy from the inside, are ideal for any time of day. They are served sweet or salty and can sweeten our mood. They are usually preferred with honey and cinnamon, but there is no limit to garnish options: praline, fruit, and syrup of every taste, jam, and colorful truffle on top, nuts or even salty or sweet cheese.
Loukoumades are of simple inspiration and with all those choices in their garnishing, they can easily become one’s, favorite sweet. That is why their history is lost in the depths of the centuries, and at the same time, it is a delight that we can find, with minor variations, in many places of the world till now. The first references to this sweet were found in Europe by Callimachus. Aristotle, Archestratus, and Aristophanes also mention it in their works. It is said that the recipe for its production is the first recorded ancient pastry recipe. A remarkable piece of information is that the ritual of honoring the Olympics’ winners in ancient Greece included a treat with loukoumades, something that was repeated at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in honor of the first Olympics.
For some, loukoumades are a symbol of happiness and fertility, while others consider them to be aphrodisiacs. The places where they are made are so many that it is quite reasonable to have obtained several ‘properties’ over the years. Whether they are true or not, the only thing for sure is that this is one of our favorite sweet treats.

urn:store:6:blog:post:71https://www.elenianna.co.uk/simple-mediterranean-olive-oil-pastaSimple Mediterranean Olive Oil Pasta
I dare say, this simple Mediterranean olive oil pasta is textbook Mediterranean diet deliciousness! It skips all the fluff and heavy sauces in favor of extra virgin olive oil and a few ingredients.
This simple olive oil pasta recipe takes inspiration from a Naples dish called “spaghetti aglio e olio. Or,”spaghetti with garlic and oil.”
In a typical spaghetti aglio e olio recipe, pasta is coated in a simple garlic-olive oil sauce, then garnished with parsley and grated Parmesan.
But this Mediterranean olive oil pasta goes just a little bit further, by adding a few favorite ingredients like grape tomatoes and olives.

A couple of tips for this olive oil pasta

First, this dish makes a feature of extra virgin olive oil and relies heavily on its flavor. The oil is briefly heated through, but not cooked. That’s why you’ll want to use the best quality extra virgin olive oil you can afford.

Remember, oils that are simply labeled “pure” have usually been heat-treated and refined by mechanical means and, consequently, lack character and flavor.

Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil
For this recipe, I always use our Greek Early Harvest extra virgin olive oil. It is organically grown and processed from native Koroneiki olives, which are hand-picked early in the season while still green, and processed within hours to make this prized ‘liquid gold’ they call ‘agoureleo.’

Our Early Harvest oil is an exquisite cold extracted and unfiltered oil with a perfectly balanced complexity— rich green, fruity and pungent with a peppery finish. Our oil features exceptionally high levels of polyphenols and low acidity of less than 0.35%.

It makes a ton of difference in dishes like this Mediterranean olive oil pasta.

Secondly, when making the sauce, do not allow the garlic to brown, it will taint its flavor. If it does brown or burns, you’ll need to toss it and start over.

INGREDIENTS

1 Kg thin spaghetti

1/2 cup Early Harvest Greek Extra Virgin Olive Oil

4 garlic cloves, crushed

Salt

12 oz grape tomatoes, halved

3 scallions (green onions), top trimmed, both whites and greens chopped

1 tsp black pepper

1/4 cup pitted olives, halved

10–15 fresh basil leaves, torn

Zest of 1 lemon

Crushed red pepper flakes, optional

INSTRUCTIONS

Follow package instructions to cook thin spaghetti pasta to al dente (mine took 6 minutes to cook in plenty of boiling water with salt and olive oil).

When pasta is almost cooked, heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Lower the heat and add garlic and a pinch of salt. Cook for 10 seconds, stirring regularly. Stir in the parsley, tomatoes and chopped scallions. Cook over low heat until just warmed through, about 30 seconds or so.

When the pasta is ready, remove from heat, drain cooking water and return to its cooking pot. Pour the warmed olive oil sauce in and toss to coat thoroughly. Add black pepper and toss again to coat.

Add the remaining ingredients and toss one more time. Serve immediately in pasta bowls, and if you like, top each with more basil leaves. Enjoy!

urn:store:6:blog:post:63https://www.elenianna.co.uk/a-scent-to-make-you-feel-good-with-candles-you-needs-this-yearA scent to make you feel good with Candles You Needs This Year
You don't have to spend a ton of money on a scented candle. Recipes are indeed a critical part of acing your cooking game, but ingredients? They make more of a difference than you might think. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply cooking with olive oil — a high-quality and healthy olive oil — is an easy switch. And one that will bring all the benefits, both in flavor and nutrition.

Start here – the secret to any great meal is cooking with olive oil. Chefs have been using olive oil for centuries to make meals taste exceptional. To the connoisseur, olive oil is as nuanced as fine wine — olives impart the same terroir as wine. The flavor of the region is even more pronounced when pressed into oil.

Whether it’s a first “cold” pressing also makes a difference in the flavor and robustness. Any oil that’s not first cold pressing is going to lose flavor. And when it comes to olive oil, it’s all about the flavor.

Then there’s the freshness — a quality far-too often overlooked in olive oil. Unlike wine, age won’t do your oil any favors (or flavors!). Rancidity can happen quickly with oil. And big-name oil brands can often cut their olive oils with cheaper oils, too. Diluting both health benefits and flavor. It’s why you want to look for an olive oil producer that takes pride in their craft from growing and harvesting to pressing and bottling.

Once you’ve had good olive oil, you’ll know the difference immediately. Good, fresh olive oil will have spicy, grassy notes. It will be peppery but also buttery soft. If it makes you want to drink it straight out of the bottle or go out and buy the best bread in town to dunk into it, you’ve found yourself a keeper.

And when it comes to olive oil, elenianna big healthy collection is a cut above the rest.

We think it’s great to have different extra virgin olive oils for different recipes – that’s why we offer our Organic extra virgin olive oils, and our healthy Collection extra virgin olive oils with more pronounced olive flavor, great for finishing, dipping and drizzling. Olive oil does not get better with age! If you wait to use your extra virgin olive oil and break it out only for special occasions, there is a good chance it will go rancid before you’re able to finish it.

A new olive oil category that is increasingly getting more attention because of its health benefits is High Phenolic Olive Oil

WHAT IS HIGH PHENOLIC OLIVE OIL?

It is a type of olive oil that is supercharged, that has health-giving properties that are off the scale: it is anti-aging, anti-microbial, and it can help you totally re-structure your gut biome.

We only just discovering how much of our health is impacted by our gut, and how so many illnesses stem from it, so if we can fix this area then we can also resolve issues like IBS, psoriasis, weight gain or loss, and many auto-immune illnesses.

High phenolic olive oil also has significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective and neuroprotective properties.

Combine the benefits of a high phenol EVOO in your diet as in a salad or Mixed Greens.
urn:store:6:blog:post:59https://www.elenianna.co.uk/food-gifts-thatll-speak-to-every-foodies-soulFood Gifts That'll Speak to Every Foodie's Soul and Will Love This Christmas
Finding the perfect food gift basket doesn’t have to be hard! Elenianna makes sending the best gift baskets easy. Make sure you're choosing the right yogurt for your dietary needs, as many store-bought yogurts contain high amounts of added sugar. You can also use honey and yogurt for face masks.

Benefits of Honey
Historically, honey — a sweet substance produced by bees — was used as an edible sweetener long before cane sugar became widely available. There are two main types of honey: Raw honey is harvested directly from beehives, and processed honey is treated with heat or filtered in some way. Store-bought honey is often treated with heat to remove any impurities and to extend the shelf life of the product.

Harvard Health Publishing explains that honey is made of 17 percent water, 31 percent glucose, and 38 percent fructose. It also contains some vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The vitamins found in honey include ascorbic acid, niacin, and riboflavin, and the minerals found in honey include zinc, manganese, calcium, iron, and potassium. However, these are only available in trace amounts, so don't count on honey to contribute much to your vitamin and mineral intake!

One tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories and 17.30 grams of carbs, of which over 12 grams are sugars.

Benefits of Yogurt
The Nutrition Source at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health explains that plain yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium, but it also contains live bacterial content. These live microorganisms are called probiotics, and they can help improve your immune function, improve your digestion, and possibly even protect against infections from harmful bacteria.

One cup of plain, low-fat yogurt contains around 415 milligrams of calcium. The National Institutes of Health recommends a daily calcium intake of 1,000 milligrams for men and women aged 19 to 50, 1,000 milligrams for men aged 51 to 70, 1,200 milligrams for women aged 51 to 70, and 1,200 milligrams for anyone over 70 years of age.

Healthy calcium intake can help decrease your risk of developing osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease that is typically found in older adults. Calcium also plays a role in clotting your blood, helping nerves send and receive signals, flexing and relaxing your muscles, and keeping your heartbeat regular.

Four benefits of combining honey and yogurt

1. Honey and yogurt are great sources of protein and carbohydrates
Yogurt is packed with protein and honey has a high content of glucose (a form of carbohydrate). People who work out need both of these to keep them going; both are necessary for endurance and muscle recovery.

When eaten together, the protein in the yogurt and carbohydrates in the honey will allow those who exercise to have more energy, have a faster healing process (for those who do intense workouts), and recover the natural way.

2. Honey and yogurt as a skincare regimen

One of the most popular benefits of combining honey and yogurt is they help you achieve healthy skin. When these two are combined, they provide exfoliating properties that will give your skin a healthy glow!

3. Honey and yogurt as an acne treatment
The honey and yogurt combo is not only great for skin exfoliation. A lot of people also swear by its acne-fighting benefits.

Yogurt is a great source of zinc, minerals that can help fight acne. Those who have problems with acne apply zinc topically (usually with supplements), but more and more people, especially those whose acne is inflamed, have actually started using yogurt!

Honey contains antibacterial, and antiseptic properties that help kill skin germs, and anti-inflammatory properties that can help lessen the annoying red (and painful!) acne.

Making yogurt and a honey facial mixture is simple. All you need are two tablespoons of plain yogurt and a teaspoon of raw honey. Apply the mixture on a clean, dry face. Leave it on your skin for 10 minutes, rinse with warm water, and pat dry with a towel.

If you or your kids are having problems with acne, We strongly suggest that you try this first before you start using strong facial soaps with chemicals you can’t even pronounce. Sometimes, using natural ingredients is the answer!

4. Honey and yogurt as sources of probiotics
Both honey and yogurt are packed with probiotics, which are basically live bacteria and yeasts that aid in digestion and keep your gut healthy. They’re also called the “good bacteria.”

Yogurt contains probiotic lactobacillus, which has helped me countless times when I had an upset stomach or diarrhea (sorry for the TMI, but we’ve all been there!).

Greek yogurt tastes a bit like sour cream, so to add a bit of sweetness, I drizzle about one tablespoon of Greek honey every time I have my dose.

Honey is said to contain probiotic bacteria that are endemic among honey bees! The research revealed that the bacteria is called Lactobacillus Kunkeei, which is also present in the bee pollen and royal jelly in the hive.

Honey and yogurt are good on their own, but when combined, they provide wonderful flavors and excellent health benefits. It’s time to maximize their nutrients by incorporating them into your daily snacks and meals!

HONEY COLLECTION
urn:store:6:blog:post:56https://www.elenianna.co.uk/greek-pine-tree-honey-or-fir-honey-Greek Pine Tree Honey or FIR Honey
The Greek Fir Honey or Greek Pine Honey is one of the rarest products in all over the world. Its impressive pearl-amber color, the characteristic metallic highlights, and its extremely thick texture make it special. It is spicy and it tastes like toffee while the flavors of the various flowers and the fir that are given off, constitute a real feast of tastes and colors. All the above characteristics combined with its natural property not to crystallize and it's rich in trace elements composition, satisfy the most demanding consumers. Enjoy this distinctive type of honey that is generously offered to us by the Greek nature.

Pine tree honey or organic pine honey is what we call a honeydew or forest honey. It is produced by bees that collect honeydew (sugary secretions) from a scale insect species called Marchalina hellenica, which lives on the sap of certain pine trees. The marchalina hellenica can be found of Mount Mainalo in Arcadia. This just means the honey starts off in a slightly different way to more typical honeys. In this case, bees gather nectar from honeydew excreted by plant-sucking insects like greenflies. The better-known method of gathering nectar is by honey bees visiting the flowers of blooming plants.

Honeydew honey is generally quite dark and thick compared to the lighter varieties.

Pine tree honey has a full-bodied yet quite pleasant flavor that is suggestive of pine sap. This is also one of those honey that makes a perfect and much healthier alternative to table sugar. It's particularly nice when taken with black teas. Pine honey is great when it's spread across toast, hot scones or added to pep up fruity dessert dishes. A lot of creative cooks like to add this honey to create a bit of sweetness to various savory dishes too. Culinary uses aside, pine, like many other kinds of honey, boasts some incredible health benefits.

As a Healer

Thanks to its anti-bacterial properties, pine tree honey can be applied directly to the skin as a healing agent. It helps to speed up the healing process of wounds, burns, and sunburn. Those who use it as a healing agent swear by its effectiveness.

Most of the honeydew honey boasts stronger antioxidant properties than the floral varieties. The reason for this is because they contain high levels of flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Antioxidants are important because they are what help to protect against free radicals. The thing that most people relate to free radicals is premature aging. However, physical aging is one of the lesser worries when it comes to the damage that free radicals can cause to human health. It's the age-related disorders that are of most concern. This can include things like heart disease, cancers, Alzheimer's disease, and macular degeneration. So we should embrace anything that can help protect against free radicals.

The Science

A 2007 study looked at the differences between nectar and honeydew honey. The conclusion was this: honeydew honey are better antioxidants than nectar honey.

A 2012 study published in The Journal of Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Food Sciences, did some research into honey varieties. The aim was to compare the properties of 18 different kinds of honey. The testing included both floral and forest honey. Researchers found Greek pine honey to be better than all the others with regards to its strong anti-bacterial properties. It exerted antibacterial effects against the following bacterium:

coli

marcescens

sphaericus

epidermidis

subtilis

A 2009 study published in the November issue of the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition also had something to report on pine, honey. They found it to be among the best sugar alternatives of all the honeys. As a natural sweetener, it provided the human body with essential minerals. The researchers state that it's a particularly good source of potassium. Potassium is a mineral that's essential for life. It's necessary for the major organs to work properly, including the heart and kidneys. Pine honey also contains a number of other minerals aside from potassium. These are calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and zinc.

Summary

Pine tree honey is forest honey with good standing in the world. Its nutritional profile is excellent as is its culinary use. The crystallization of pure pine honey is nice and slow. In fact, this honey will remain fluid for 18 months or more when stored correctly. Whether you're looking for a healthy food staple or a natural healing agent, you will want to put pine tree honey onto your shortlist of options.

Is Fir Honey Vegan or is pine honey vegan if it says it's natural? In the case of fir honey (also known as pine honey), honey bees harvest honeydew from scale insects that live on the sap of certain pine trees. Then, just as with normal honey, a beekeeper exploits the bees to steal the honey they produce from their hives. Since animals are still being exploited to produce this honey, it’s not technically vegan.

Here you can find pine honey recipe and here pine honey price and pine honey for sale.
urn:store:6:blog:post:55https://www.elenianna.co.uk/greek-aromatic-and-therapeutic-herbsGreek Aromatic and therapeutic herbs
Ancient Greek Herbs

In Homer’s epics The Iliad and The Odyssey (800 BC), 63 plant species from the Minoan, Mycenaean and Egyptian Assyrian pharmacotherapy were referred to. The Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Romans, and Arabs also relied on herbalism, which was assimilated into the philosophical principles, traditions and practices of their culture. Consequently, therapeutics developed from being empirical and instinctive to being magical and theocratic. The theocratic viewpoint constituted an element of all ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, until the advent of the Hippocratic School, which was based on observation and experiment. Hippocrates himself (late 5th century BC) mentioned 300-400 medicinal plants, classified by physiological action. He considered them the base of medical science, praised their therapeutic qualities and employed them in his everyday practice. Theophrastus (371-287 BC), Plato’s and Aristotle’s Student, famous philosopher and herbalist, continued Hippocrates’s work and recorded 500 species of Greek herbs, pinpointing the relaxing and empowering properties of various herbal tea flavors. Plant-derived therapeutic oils are mentioned on clay findings of cuneiform writing (2600BC) in Mesopotamia, while about 30 medicinal plants are mentioned in the Bible. In Dioscourides’ work De Materia Medica (1st century AD), herbal medicaments are described, providing the knowledge for most of the later medicinal preparations.

The great empires controlled the medicinal plants’ production and trade for centuries, while in the Middle Ages, their cultivation in abbeys and monasteries facilitated the development of knowledge on their therapeutic properties. During the Ottoman Empire, many Orthodox monasteries established hospitals within their premises, where remedies were prepared from medicinal plants cultivated by the monks. In a monastic script of this period in the island of Cyprus (1571-1878), 494 herbal descriptions and 231 plants belonging to 70 different botanical families were described. In Greece, for centuries, a large part of the native population health problems was encountered by empirical doctors, such as the renowned “Vikoyiatroi” of the Zagori region in Epirus (17th-19th century), who collected and used medicinal plants from the nearby Vikos Canyon. Eventually, with the advancement of modern medicine, traditional remedies were gradually abandoned in the developed world.

Aromatic herbs, however, are nowadays being re-examined, their extracts are thoroughly studied and their properties are revised, in an effort to complement or replace the existing synthetic chemical substances used in the modern food and industries. It is estimated that up to four billion people (representing 80% of the world’s population) living in the developing world rely on herbal medicinal products as a primary source of healthcare. In Africa, up to 90% and in India up to 70% of the population in rural areas depend on traditional herbal medicines to meet their health care needs. The use of herbal medicines has also become widely embraced in many developed countries, such as in Europe, North America, and Australia. In 2003, the percentage of the population that had used them at least once is 48% in Australia, 70%in Canada, 42% in the United States, 31% in Belgium and 49% in France. In the United States in 2007, about 38% of adults and 12% of children were using some form of traditional medicine. In the European Union alone, it is estimated that around 100 million people are using traditional herbal medicines. In these developed countries, the most important among many other reasons for seeking herbal therapy is the belief that it will promote healthier living.

Aromatic herbs have also become and constitute a fundamental element of the Greek cuisine, known for combining different elements wisely, with a unique sense of proportion and equilibrium. Without oregano, thyme, sage, and savory, many Mediterranean dishes lose their inmost qualities. Because of the many herbs used on a daily basis, there is no one herb that defines Greek cooking. Greek cuisine is all about enhancing the natural flavors of the products. In this respect, herbs are the very best way to add flavor and texture, without adding fat or calories and at the same time, increase the health benefits of foods one already enjoys. People use herbs to cut back on sodium intake, as less salt is used to flavor a meal. As Hippocrates (4th century BC), the great Greek physician, father of medicine, has wisely said: “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food”.

According to one study, “intake of herbs (such as oregano, thyme, sage) may contribute significantly to the total intake of plant antioxidants and be an even better source of dietary antioxidants than many other food groups, such as fruits, berries, cereals, and vegetables”.

The Mediterranean weather provides one of the best conditions for the growth of herbs, in Greece. These beneficial plants have been known for centuries and used both in cooking; for their flavors, as well as in medicine, for their healing properties.

The Greek territory provides an ideal environment for herbs, which are found flourishing on mountain slopes and green fields.

Although the list of local herbs is endless, we have picked some of the lesser-known ones and included them on this list.

These are some of the most powerful Greek herbs list and greek medicinal herbs to include in any diet.

Summer Savory

Summer Savory or Greek Throubi is a perennial plant of the Mediterranean usually used in cooking. Ancient Greeks also used to make flavored wine with this herb.

During the Middle Ages, this herb was used to heal sore throats, coughs, and toothaches.

In modern herbal medicine, throubi greek herb is mainly used for its healing properties of the digestive system. It also stimulates the appetite and helps in the treatment of diarrhea, bowel spasms, pain from colic, and nausea.

It can also be applied externally as an antiseptic on wounds and insect bites, offering immediate relief.

Oregano

Oregano is maybe the most commonly used herb in Greek Cuisine, in soups, stews, with meat and fish, and of course, no Greek “Horiatiki” salad worth its salt, is without oregano.

In Ancient Greece, it was believed to encourage good luck and good health and symbolize joy. Oregano was planted near homes to ward off evil spirits and when worn on the head during sleep, encouraged psychic dreams.

Mint (Menta)

Greek myth has mint being named after Minthe, a water nymph, who drew the attention of Hades, God of the Underworld, when Persephone, his wife learned of this, she turned Minthe into a herb.

Mint is excellent, in the form of tea, for indigestion, nerve disorders, dizziness, sore throats, coughs, headaches, and insomnia.

Mint is used in many Greek dishes; Greek mint is of superior quality, both aroma, and flavor, owing to the rich soil and the warm temperatures of Greece.

Rosemary

The Latin word for rosemary, Rosmarinus, means “Dew of the sea” as it is said the plant emerged, alongside Aphrodite (Venus) when she rose up from the sea.

Ancient Greek students wore wreaths of rosemary, to aid memory.

A member of the mint family, rosemary is thought to be an antiseptic, to purify the blood

Mint is beneficial for asthma and breathing problems, as well as relieving headaches and indigestion.

Rosemary goes particularly well with roast meat, especially lamb.

Sideritis, (Greek Mountain tea)

The name is derived from the word iron, (Sideron), and in ancient time was used to heal wounds caused by iron weapons, such as arrows and swords.

Hippocrates prescribed it as a tonic; it is one of the most popular herbal teas in Greece.

Sage (Latin Salvia) (Faskomilo)

Ancient Greeks believed Sage warded off death and brought about immortality, or, a long and healthy life.

Greek physicians praised it so much, that it inspired the Romans to name it salvia, meaning; saving lives.

Sage is thought to lower cholesterol, enhance memory and soothe skin irritations and inflammation.

It’s quite a strong-tasting, pungent herb, and is used primarily with mild, bland tasting foods.

Chamomile

In Greek, the word chamomile means apple of the ground, so-called for its fresh apple scent and its low-growing nature.

Hippocrates was the first to mention chamomile and recommended it for purification, protection and to fight colds.

Chamomile tea is well known for its properties as a sedative, a relaxant, as an aid for sleep and for stomach disorders.

Thyme

Τhyme, in Ancient Greece, was as a source of courage, and was used as incense and infusions for bathing, and, to flavor liqueurs and cheese.

Placed beneath a pillow, in sachets, it was said to aid sleep and ward off nightmares.

Women gave it to warriors before they headed off into battle; it was placed on coffins to ensure a safe passage into the afterlife.

Thyme is one of the few herbs which will retain all its flavor when dried and is one of the herbs used in Bouquet Garni, a bundle of herbs, tied together and used to flavor savory dishes.

Oil of thyme is an effective mouthwash and antiseptic. If you love honey, then you will want to know about Greek honey.

Greek Honey is special in all of Europe because:

* Greece has more beehives “per acre” than any other country in Europe.

* The best honey in Greece comes from “Thyme” (Thimari in Greek), by far the best honey in the world and a favorite among honey connoisseurs.

* The honey from Greece is considered to be some of the finest honey in the world. Variables such as unlimited summer sun, the biodiversity of the Greek countryside plus the rich variety of Greek flora which includes over 850 species found nowhere else in the world! Earth scientists and botanists consider Greece a country with the richest flora in the Mediterranean basin, (more than 7,500 different species of herbs, plants, wildflowers, and trees). Thus, with this magnificent array of nature’s blessings, the bees give us multiple types of Greek honey which are its claim to popularity and fame. Now, maybe you are starting to understand the pride in the country’s honey and its top position in the world market.

History and why Honey has been valued by the Greeks:

The history and use of Greek honey are impressive. Since ancient times honey has been used both as a food and a source of medicinal therapy. Some of the legendary greats of Greece such as the “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates, wrote, "Honey and pollen cause warmth, clean sores and ulcers, soften hard ulcers of lips, heal carbuncles and running sores." Aristotle, the philosopher, and student of Socrates believed that honey prolonged life. There was “honey therapy” used at the most famed health spa in ancient times, the Asklepieion.

What is Honey?

Honey is a gift from the bees of a sweet, thick, sugary solution from the “honeydew” (sweet secretions of insects feeding on the plant sap) or the nectar that a flower, herb, or tree provides. The ingredients are varying proportions of fructose, water, glucose, oil and a special enzyme produced and added by the bees. To make 1 lb. of this sought after delicacy, bees fly to 50-100 flowers “per flight” and actually fly thousands of miles to make the equivalent of 1 lb. of honey. Bees fill their sacs with these juices, then fly back to the “house bees” who then take the nectar, add enzymes from “their” bodies which cause the moisture to evaporate and that turns the nectar into honey. After a time, the nectar which is stored in a honeycomb cell becomes the honey we know. So you can have either “nectar” honey or “honeydew honey. In some studies, it has been found that the darker honey generated by bees feeding on honeydew have greater antioxidant properties than those produced by bees feeding on nectar.

FUN HONEY FACTS:

In Greek “Mele” is the word for honey…. This is natural with raw unfiltered honey (Simply place the jar in a bowl of warm water and the crystals will melt into the golden liquid you associate with honey).

Health Benefits from Honey:

The unique mixture of ingredients of Greek honey is good for preventing fatigue and enhancing athletic performance. Greek honey, in particular, boasts high vitamin, enzyme, amino acid and mineral content.

Studies show that honey is one of the easiest foods to digest and is known for its cancer-fighting properties (rich in phenolic compounds), aids in the prevention of osteoporosis and breast cancer (oestrogenic properties), and contains anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal substances. It’s the only food in the world that has everything human needs. It will not spoil and never goes bad. Four Thousand (4,000) year old tombs have been found to contain fresh edible honey in sealed containers. Honey also has been used for millennium as a therapeutic solution to health problems. Dr. and proprietor, Dr. Galen, (second in history only to Hippocrates), of the ancient worlds largest “health healing spa in Pergamon, was known to have done honey therapy.

Honey is a good source of antioxidants and research shows that consuming more anti-oxidant rich foods may help protect against cellular damage.

Honey has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for sore throats and coughs, and according to recent research may, in fact, be more effective than some common medicines. Mixed with lemon juice and consumed slowly, honey coats the throat and alleviates discomfort. Honey can also be used as an effective anti-microbial agent to treat minor burns, cuts and other bacterial infections.

urn:store:6:blog:post:53https://www.elenianna.co.uk/which-olive-oil-is-best-or-healthiestWhich olive oil is best or healthiest?
What's all the fuss about good olive oil?

Fresh, high-quality extra virgin olive oil is one of the world's healthiest foods. Olive oils crafted with care are packed with antioxidants and phenolic compounds that are proven to help reduce and prevent diseases.

The best olive oils are blow-your-mind delicious and they elevate the tastes of our foods in ways we never imagined. Hundreds of olive varieties offer countless pairing possibilities that chefs are only beginning to discover.

What makes a good olive oil?

Fruitiness
Every good olive oil needs to have the aroma of fresh fruit. Olives are fruits, after all. The oil should smell fresh and fruity.

Bitterness
Olives are mighty bitter straight off the tree. So any fresh, high-quality olive oil must be bitter, which we perceive on the tongue.

Pungency
Pungency is that cough-inducing sting on the throat that's caused by the healthy phenolic compounds in fresh, high-quality olive oil.

Phenols Make Olive Oil Medicine

Perhaps the most important characteristic of olive oil is the health-producing high-phenolic compounds that some possess. Two of the very best phenols are oleocanthal, a natural anti-inflammatory agent, and oleacein, a potent antioxidant.

Some of the benefits of phenols (also known as polyphenols) include:

Reduction of harmful cholesterol.
Treatment of inflammatory conditions, including asthma.
Lowering of blood pressure.
Protection against many types of cancer.
High-phenolic olive oils are much more than food—they are truly medicinal. Unfortunately, polyphenols degrade over time, so ideally you’ll choose an olive oil that is less than one year old and that had very high phenol levels at the time of its bottling.

How to Identify High-Phenol Olive Oil

The best way to tell if your favorite olive oil has a high phenol level is by simply tasting it.
Phenols give the oil a peppery after-taste. If your olive oil has absolutely zero pleasant burn to it, it probably has very low phenol levels. The best olive oils will actually make you cough a little—that’s how peppery their flavor is!
Some olive oil manufacturers publish their phenol levels (in parts per million, or ppm) on their bottles, and these are often the healthiest olive oils.
Although taste is subjective

Nutrient Composition of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is fairly nutritious.

It contains modest amounts of Vitamins E and K and plenty of beneficial fatty acids.

This is the nutrient content of 100 grams of olive oil

Saturated fat: 13.8%.
Monounsaturated fat: 73% (most of it the 18 carbon long oleic acid).
Omega-6: 9.7%.
Omega-3: 0.76%.
Vitamin E: 72% of the RDA.
Vitamin K: 75% of the RDA.
But where extra virgin olive oil really shines is in its content of antioxidants.

These substances are biologically active and some of them can help fight serious diseases

Some of the main antioxidants are the anti-inflammatory oleocanthal, as well as oleuropein, a substance that protects LDL cholesterol from oxidation

Some people have criticized olive oil for having a high Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio (over 10:1), but keep in mind that the total amount of polyunsaturated fats is still relatively low, so this shouldn't be a cause for concern.

Can You Cook With It?
During cooking, fatty acids can oxidize. That is, they react with oxygen and become damaged.
It is mostly the double bonds in the fatty acid molecules that are responsible for this.
For this reason, saturated fats (no double bonds) are resistant to high heat, while polyunsaturated fats (many double bonds) are sensitive and become damaged.
It turns out that olive oil, which contains mostly monounsaturated fatty acids (only one double bond), is actually fairly resistant to high heat.
In one study, researchers heated extra virgin olive oil to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit) for 36 hours. The oil was highly resistant to damage.
Another study used olive oil for deep frying, and it took 24-27 hours for it to reach damage levels that were deemed harmful.
Overall, olive oil seems to be very safe... even for cooking at fairly high heat.
urn:store:6:blog:post:52https://www.elenianna.co.uk/the-traditional-cretan-diet-is-considered-to-be-one-of-the-healthiest-in-the-worldThe traditional Cretan diet is considered to be one of the healthiest in the world
Since ancient times, people on the island have been consuming local products. The Mediterranean diet, which is based on herbs, legumes, meat, fish, honey, dairy products, and wine, is celebrated in Crete. The Cretan traditional cuisine is simple and inventive and is based on the endless variety of Cretan endemic products. What is never missing from the Cretan cuisine is olive oil, wheat or barley dusks, and of course raki, which is a local traditional alcoholic drink.

Olive oil is a liquid fat obtained from olives (the fruit of Olea europaea; family Oleaceae), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The oil is produced by pressing whole olives.

It is commonly used in cooking, whether for frying or as a salad dressing. It is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and soaps, and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps, and has additional uses in some religions. There is limited evidence of its possible health benefits.

The olive is one of three core food plants in Mediterranean cuisine; the other two are wheat and grapes.

Honey gets its sweetness from the monosaccharides fructose and glucose and has about the same relative sweetness as sucrose (granulated sugar). It has attractive chemical properties for baking and a distinctive flavor when used as a sweetener. Most microorganisms do not grow in honey, so sealed honey does not spoil, even after thousands of years.

Honey provides 64 calories in a serving of one tablespoon equivalent to 1272 kJ per 100 g.

Raki is the name of the traditional spirituous liquor of Crete and the favorite drink of the Cretans. It is distilled using natural ingredients with no additives. The raw material used is the grape pomace (strafyla), that is, the residue of the pressing of fresh grapes. The boiler is heated and when it reaches the correct temperature the distillate is collected. This first distillate is called “protoraki” (first raki) and is rather strong with an intense aroma. The spirit itself is certainly worth trying; however, the whole distillation process is also of particular interest

The Mediterranean climate of Crete endows Cretan products with unique taste. Thus, the opulent yield of the island includes exquisite dairy and cheese products. Cretan milk and yogurt are quite different in terms of taste and quality from their industrial equivalents. Local yogurt includes all kinds of beneficial bacteria which help strengthen the digestive system.

The area of Pano (Upper) Mirabello has always been known for its top-quality yogurt. The goat or sheep milk is considered more beneficial than the widely consumed cow milk and it is very close to breast milk. The area’s cheese products such as myzithra, kefalotiri, xinogalo (buttermilk), anthotiros and white brined cheese are among the favorites for all those who value top quality.

Buy online Cretan food products here
urn:store:6:blog:post:50https://www.elenianna.co.uk/dont-leave-greece-without-trying-greek-spoon-sweetsDont leave Greece without trying Greek Spoon Sweets
Greek Spoon Sweets: An Ancient Gesture of Greek Hospitality

A guest arriving at a Greek home should expect an overwhelming array of traditional welcoming treats that will be presented upon their arrival, from coffee and cookies to cakes, homemade liqueurs, loukoumi and more. But there’s one sweet something that has long been linked with hospitality and welcoming in any proper, traditional Greek home: glyko tou koutaliou, or “spoon sweet,” a type of fruit preserve whose roots go way back to ancient times.

For centuries, preservation was a necessary part of the harvest – it was the only way to make excess fresh fruits and vegetables last for as long as possible. Based on historical references, we know that the most common preservation methods included sun-drying fruits and vegetables or preserving them in either honey or grape molasses (petimezi), which usually involved first boiling the fruit.

The ancient Greeks made something called melimilon (μελίμηλον): quince boiled in wine and then preserved in honey. It was through making this dish that pectin – a key ingredient in marmalade making – was discovered. Later, with the arrival of sugar to this side of the world and the gradual decrease of its price, preservation in sugar syrup begun.

Spoon sweets are fruit preserves that differ from jam and marmalade mainly in terms of texture – the ingredient being preserved should be firm and in a thick, transparent syrup, unlike the soft and pulpy texture of jam and marmalade. They are primarily made of fruit, which can be sliced, grated or even left whole, like figs, sour cherries or grapes. It’s also possible to make them from just the rind, which is usually the case with citrus fruit like lemons and bergamot oranges, but also with watermelon – just the white part of the rind – in the summer.

You’ll also find spoon sweets made of unripened nuts, soft rind, and shell included, as well as vegetables (tomato, pumpkin, eggplant and more) or even roots, like onion or beetroot for instance. A more recent trend in spoon sweets are those made from different types of mushrooms – while they might sound strange, they are actually quite flavorful.

But the most delicate and aromatic of all are those made of flowers, like fresh rose petals, newly blossomed lemon flowers and other citrus tree florets, or even jasmine.

Generally speaking, spoon sweets are made by boiling the fruit, vegetable or flower in sugar syrup with a lemon rind and infusing the mixture with spices or herbs like cinnamon, clove, vanilla, marjoram, rose geranium and more. Sometimes nuts are added too – most often whole white almonds – either to stuff the fruit, as with figs and tomatoes, or towards the end, to give it a crunch and an extra kick of flavor.

Buy our best Traditional Greek Spoon Sweets by small Greek producers from all over Greece here or www.elenianna.com/spoon-sweets

urn:store:6:blog:post:49https://www.elenianna.co.uk/dont-leave-greece-without-trying-part-1Dont leave Greece without trying Part 1
Greece has long been a family holiday favourite with its beautiful blue waters, child-friendly beaches and an abundance of delicious food made with fresh ingredients. Make sure you sample all the country has to offer with our pick of traditional dishes…

1. Olives and olive oil

Greeks have been cultivating olives for millennia – some even say that Athena gave an olive tree to the city of Athens, thus winning its favour. She granted them wisdom, and since wisdom alone cannot sustain life, she created the olive tree. Archaeological studies prove that the Greeks have been involved in full-scale cultivation of the olive tree and production of olive oil for over 4,000 years. The health and therapeutic benefits of olive oil were first mentioned by Hippocrates, the father of Medicine. Modern medical studies have, indeed, shown that the consumption of olive oil is of significant value where human health is concerned, and in particular the health of the heart and circulatory diseases and many diet-related illnesses.
Greek meals are accompanied by local olives, some cured in a hearty sea salt brine, others like wrinkly throubes, eaten uncured from the tree. Similarly, olive oil, the elixir of Greece, is used liberally in cooking and salads and drizzled over most dips and dishes. Many tavernas use their own oil.

Here you can find the best of best Greek extra virgin olive oil and olives
https://www.elenianna.com/extra-virgin-olive-oil
https://www.elenianna.com/greek-olives

urn:store:6:blog:post:48https://www.elenianna.co.uk/organic-greek-honey-from-fir-one-of-the-most-rare-and-exclusive-varieties-in-the-worldOrganic Greek honey from Fir, one of the most rare and exclusive varieties in the world.
The Greek Fir Honey is one of the rarest products all over the world. Its impressive pearl-amber colour, the characteristic metallic highlights and its extremely thick texture make it special. It is spicy and it tastes like toffee while the flavours of the various flowers and the fir that are given off, constitute a real feast of tastes and colours. Its thick caramel-like texture and pearlescent lustre make this a world-class honey bursting with extraordinary flavour and aroma, unlike any other. All the above characteristics combined with its natural property not to crystallize and it's rich in trace elements composition, satisfy the most demanding consumers.

The Fir Honey belongs to the category of honeydews and it is collected from granules and aphids that parasite on the Greek firs and produce honeydews which are pollinated by the bees. The most important granule is the “Phemicryphus” and it parasites on the “abies Cephalonia”, a specific type of fir that grows on the mountainous areas at the south of Olympos, in Evritania, Pertouli, Karpenisi, Taygeto, Arcadia (Mount Parnon and Mount Mainalo) and in other areas.

Enjoy this distinctive type of honey that is generously offered to us by the Greek nature at elenianna.

Premium Organic Honey From FIR (PDO) Limited Edition Eulogia of Sparta

Premium Organic Greek Fir Honey 250g MELLIN

Premium Organic Greek Honey Fir with Thyme 250g MELLIN

Raw Organic Fir Honey Limited Edition Luxurious Gift Box 250g - Philotimo

Raw Organic Fir Honey Limited Edition Luxurious Gift Box 450g - Philotimo

urn:store:6:blog:post:47https://www.elenianna.co.uk/the-magic-of-chios-mastihaThe Magic of Chios Mastiha
So, what is mastiha?

Mastiha is the treasured gem of the Aegean, a sweet, clear crystal from the aromatic resin of the Mastic Tree. This tree is extraordinarily rare and only grows in the southern part of the Greek island of Chios, in the eastern Aegean. Mastic has been harvested for at least 2,500 years since Greek Antiquity and is still only exclusively grown on the island of Chios. Mastic sap drops hang from the tree, and sparkle in the sunlight, they are said to resemble crystalline tear-drops; for this reason, the mastic sap is known as the ‘tears of Chios’. Chios mastiha has been recognised as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product by the EU.

The Mastic Tree

is an evergreen shrub that may grow as high as 3 metres. It develops slowly, taking 40 to 50 years to reach its final form, but starts producing its precious resin within five years of being planted. The bush itself could not be more common in coastal areas all over the Mediterranean, and yet it is only on Chios, and the southern half of that island, to be precise, around the so-called Mastiha Villages (Mastihohoria), that the trees produce their resin commercially viable amounts. It has been the primary source of income for residents of the area for countless generations.

Why were you so drawn to mastiha?

Chios mastiha can play an important role in our everyday lives as it exhibits strong antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidization action. I think it’s important in this day and age to focus foremost on our health and to then promote health and balance in our daily lives. We should also become more conscious of our environment and everything we absorb into our bodies.

Mastiha from Chios and its benefits both for health and for beauty.

Of all the captivating aromatic scents in the world, none is quite like Chios mastiha. The resinous crystal granule comes from the mastic tree. Published scientific research indicates that Chios mastiha exhibits strong antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation action.

Chios mastiha is known to have many positive health benefits including:

hygiene of the gastrointestinal system, prevention and treatment of peptic system disorders (such as ulcers and dyspepsia)

healing of the skin and skin rejuvenation

beneficial effects on lipids and glucose metabolism

oral hygiene (contributing to the reduction
of plaque formation, elimination of the oral bacteria and strengthening the gums)

Uses

Mastic is used as gum, aroma and flavour in pastry making and also in the production of the famous mastic liquor. Mastic oil is also used in furniture and musical instruments industry.

Mastic has important qualities for medicine and pharmaceutics, some of which are known since antiquity. In medicine, it has been used to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, bronchitis and stomachache. It is also used in the production of surgical threads. In pharmaceuticals, it has been used in vitamin manufacturer. It has also been used in dentistry, cosmetics industry, distilleries etc.

Our Products

Arkoi Pine Honey with Chios Mastic 298g Eulogia

Honey with Chios Mastic Theta 130g

Skinos Mastiha Liqueur 700ml

Zeolite Clean 100% Natural 30ml [220 sprays]

urn:store:6:blog:post:46https://www.elenianna.co.uk/raw-honey-benefits-for-healing-and-popular-honey-usesRaw Honey Benefits for Healing and Popular Honey Uses
Health Benefits of Raw Honey

Healthy Weight Management
Research studies have linked honey consumption with weight loss. A San Diego State University study found that replacing sugar with honey can actually help prevent packing on extra pounds and also lower blood sugar. The results also suggest that in comparison to sugar, honey may lower serum triglycerides.

Another study from the University of Wyoming found that raw honey can activate hormones that suppress the appetite. In the double-blind randomly assigned study, appetite hormones and glycemic responses were measured in 14 healthy non-obese women after consuming a breakfast containing either honey or sugar. Overall, researchers concluded that honey consumption offers potential obesity protective effects.

Counters Pollen Allergies
Raw honey contains bee pollen, which is known to ward off infections, provide natural allergy relief and boost overall immunity. Honey’s ability to prevent allergies is based on a concept called immunotherapy. How so? The bees in your neighborhood go from flower to flower collecting pollen that causes you to suffer, but when a you consume local raw honey, you also consume that same offending local pollen. After some time, an allergy sufferer may become less sensitive to this pollen that previously caused problems and experience less seasonal allergy symptoms. Many seasonal allergy sufferers have found local, raw honey to be helpful because it desensitizes them to the fauna triggering their allergic reaction.

A 2013 study found that eating honey at a high dose (one gram per kilogram of body weight of honey daily) can improve allergy symptoms over a period of eight weeks. Researchers absorbed that the honey consumption improved overall and individual symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is an allergic response that causes itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and other similar symptoms.

Some people say that a daily tablespoon of honey can actually act like an allergy shot. The type of honey is key though since pasteurized honey does not contain any pollen. For possible seasonal allergy relief, you need to consume raw honey with pollen in it.

Natural Energy Source
Raw honey contains natural sugars (80 percent), water (18 percent), and minerals, vitamins, pollen and protein (2 percent). It’s not surprising that honey has been called “the perfect running fuel.” It provides an easily absorbed supply of energy in the form of liver glycogen, making it ideal for energetic morning starts and as a pre- and post-exercise energy source.

Studies at the University of Memphis Exercise and Sports Nutrition Laboratory have shown honey to be one of the best choices of carbohydrate to consume right before exercising. Additionally, studies have revealed that as a sporting fuel, honey performs on a par with glucose, which is the sugar used in most commercial energy gels.

When it comes to raw honey’s use in athletic endeavors, I highly recommend raw honey for both fueling and recovery. That’s why raw honey is included in some of the best pre-workout snacks and post-workout meals.

Antioxidant Powerhouse
Studies have shown that a daily dose of raw honey raises levels of health-promoting antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help block free radicals in the body that cause disease. It also boosts the immune system, acting as a preventative against any number of diseases. Honey contains polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

One study fed 25 subjects about four tablespoons of honey per day for 29 days in addition to their regular diets. When blood samples were taken at the start and end of the study, researchers found a clear, direct link between honey consumption and an increased level of disease-fighting polyphenols in the blood.

Studies have shown that honey contains the disease-fighting antioxidant flavonoids pinocembrin, pinostrobin and chrysin. Pinocembrin supports enzyme activity, and many studies have shown that pinocembrin induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) of many types of cancer cells. Laboratory research suggests that chrysin may increase the male hormone testosterone and improve bodybuilding results, but human research hasn’t found any effect on testosterone levels.

Sleep Promoter
Raw honey promotes restorative sleep in two ways. By consuming honey before bedtime, it restocks the liver’s glycogen supply and prevents the brain from triggering a crisis search for fuel, which can wake you up. Secondly, eating raw honey fosters the release of melatonin in the brain by creating a small spike in insulin levels, which stimulates the release of tryptophan in the brain. Tryptophan converts to serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin.

Melatonin also boosts immunity and helps rebuild tissue during periods of rest. Poor sleep, by comparison, has been shown to be a risk factor for hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and arthritis. As honey is a proven natural sleep aid, it naturally lowers the risk of all these health problems.

Wound and Ulcer Healer
Honey-infused bandages are known to aid healing. Peter Charles Molan at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, has found in multiple studies that honey is a natural antibacterial with wound-healing effects. He also found that honey reacts with the body’s fluids to make hydrogen peroxide, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria. In addition, “Concentrations of hydrogen peroxide generated are very low in comparison to those typically applied to a wound, thus, cytotoxic damage by hydrogen peroxide is very low.”

For the treatment of burns and wounds, honey is typically applied directly to the problem area or in a dressing that’s changed every 24 to 48 hours. Sometimes the dressing is left in place for up to 25 days. A combination of honey and ghee has also been advocated and used as dressing for infected wounds since 1991 in four Mumbai hospitals.

Honey has been studied for its use in effectively treating various types of ulcers as well. Honey may reduce the size, pain and odor of problematic skin ulcers.

Diabetes Aid
Consumption of raw honey can reduce the risk of developing diabetes and help aid medication used to treat diabetes. The combination of raw honey and cinnamon can be especially beneficial to healthy blood sugar management, as well as many other health concerns like gingivitis and acne.

According to a study out of Dubai, honey has been observed to cause a lower elevation of plasma glucose levels in diabetics compared to dextrose and sucrose. Some suggest that the insulin-boosting power of cinnamon can counteract this glucose elevation in honey, which would make your honey and cinnamon mixture a low glycemic index food combination.

Raw honey increases insulin and decreases hyperglycemia. Try consuming a little at a time and see how your blood sugar reacts to it, and add both raw honey and cinnamon to your diabetic diet plan.

Natural Cough Syrup
Raw honey has been shown to be as effective in treating coughs as over-the-counter commercial cough syrups. Increasing scientific evidence shows that a single dose of honey can reduce mucus secretion and coughs. In one study, honey was just as effective as diphenhydramine and dextromethorphan, common ingredients found in over-the counter cough medicines.

For a cough, a half teaspoon to two teaspoons of honey at bedtime is a studied and recommended dosage for anyone over the age of one.

Natural Remedy Uses for Honey
If you’re ready to incorporate raw honey into your diet, then check out these honey uses.

Improve digestion – Ingest one to 2 tablespoons of honey to counteract indigestion since it doesn’t ferment in the stomach.
Relieve nausea – Mix honey with ginger and lemon juice to help counteract nausea.
Acne cure – Honey can be used as an affordable face cleanser to fight off acne, and it’s gentle on all skin types. Take half a teaspoon of honey, warm it between your hands and spread it on your face gently. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Exfoliator – Honey makes a great exfoliator! Use honey on dry winter skin by adding two cups of honey to a bath, soak for 15 minutes, then add one cup of baking soda for the final 15 minutes.
Improve diabetes – Consumption of raw honey can reduce your risk of developing diabetes and help aid medication used to treat diabetes. Raw honey increases insulin and decreases hyperglycemia. Add a little at a time to your diet and see how your blood sugar reacts to it.
Lower cholesterol – Honey can help reduce cholesterol and, therefore, decrease your risk for coronary artery disease.
Improve circulation – Raw honey makes your brain function optimally by strengthening the heart and improving blood circulation.
Antioxidant support – Consumption of raw honey increases plaque-fighting antioxidants.
Restore Sleep – Raw honey promotes restorative sleep. Add a tablespoon to warm milk to help increase melatonin and help you sleep.
Prebiotic support – Raw honey is full of natural prebiotics that promote the growth of good bacteria in the intestine.
Improve allergies – If sourced locally, raw honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. Add one to 2 tablespoons to your diet daily.
Lose weight – Substituting raw honey for white sugar can help in weight management.
Moisturize – A spoonful of raw honey mixed with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon can be used as a hydrating lotion.
Hair mask – A raw honey hair mask can help boost shine by hydrating your hair. Simply mix 1 teaspoon of raw honey with 5 cups of warm water, apply the mixture to your hair and let it sit, then rinse thoroughly, allow your hair to air dry and style as usual.
Eczema relief – Use honey as a topical mixture along with equal parts cinnamon to relieve mild eczema.
Reduce inflammation – Raw honey has anti-inflammatory agents that can treat respiratory conditions such as asthma.
Heal wounds – Raw honey used topically can help quicken healing time for mild burns, wounds, rashes and abrasions.
Cure UTI – Honey can help improve urinary tract infections due to its antibacterial properties.
Shampoo – Raw honey can cleanse and restore the health of your hair and scalp.
Relieve sore throat and cough – Using honey for sore throat and cough is another fantastic remedy. This is especially useful for children with a cough. Simply swallow one teaspoon of honey or add it to tea with lemon.
urn:store:6:blog:post:45https://www.elenianna.co.uk/high-oleocanthal-olive-oil-slows-down-alzheimers-in-miceHigh Oleocanthal Olive Oil Slows Down Alzheimer's in Mice
Results of a recent scientific study of mice at the University of Louisiana at Monroe suggest oleocanthal rich extra virgin olive oil deserves to be designated a "medical food." Researchers led by Dr. Amal Kaddoumi demonstrated for the first time that this type of olive oil can treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in mice when used in their daily diet.

Even without any medicine, the mice that consumed this olive oil showed a “significant reduction in symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease,” Kaddoumi told Greek Liquid Gold. Moreover, according to a manuscript by Yazan S. Batarseh and Amal Kaddoumi which is now in press at The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, high oleocanthal extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) combined with the Alzheimer’s donepezil produced even more impressive results than the EVOO alone.

Batarseh and Kaddoumi point out that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is “the most common neurodegenerative disorder affecting the elderly population.” There is no cure for Alzheimer’s; only a few treatments for symptoms, including donepezil, are available, and these have limited effects.

Batarseh and Kaddoumi, therefore, propose a combination therapy for Alzheimer’s that incorporates “dietary modification by including medical foods” in the daily diet. Medical foods are “a special category of products intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or a condition that has distinctive nutritional requirements, established by medical evaluation and based on recognized scientific principle.”

Their advantage is that medical foods tend to be a safe, affordable, and widely available way of reducing symptoms, whereas new medications take a long time to develop and reach the public. Oleocanthal rich EVOO has not yet been designated a medical food by the U.S. Food Administration (FDA), but Batarseh and Kaddoumi suggest that its health benefits provide good reason to consider such a designation.

As Kaddoumi reported to Greek Liquid Gold, “diet is a probable risk factor that by modification could reduce or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Several epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that adherence to the Mediterranean diet improves cognitive function and slows the progression of AD.” Extra virgin olive oil is a main component of the Mediterranean diet. Kaddoumi explained, “according to our findings with EVOO, this observed positive effect could be attributed to the phenolic compound oleocanthal in EVOO.”

In the recent study in Louisiana, mice with mutations that lead to Alzheimer’s symptoms were fed the equivalent (for their size) of the amount of olive oil Mediterranean diet followers would eat in a day. In previous studies by the same research team, pure oleocanthal was given to mice, and it produced a similar effect. The use of actual high oleocanthal olive oil in the diet is new here, and it is this result that suggests oleocanthal-rich EVOO may deserve to be designated a medical food.

The mice were divided into four groups of 12, with a control group fed regular powdered food from ages 1 to 5 months, another group fed oleocanthal-rich EVOO mixed with powdered food at the same ages, a third group treated with donepezil starting at age 4 months for 1 month, and a fourth group fed the EVOO mix from ages 1 to 5 months and treated with donepezil for a month starting at 4 months of age (since EVOO consumption in humans can begin early, but treatment for AD begins later, if necessary).

With the greatest improvement seen in mice given both EVOO and donepezil, results suggest that long-term use of EVOO rich in oleocanthal “as a medical food combined with donepezil offers an effective therapeutic approach” to Alzheimer’s. The EVOO both enhanced the positive effect of the medication and provided additional benefits this medicine cannot offer. While donepezil has little impact on brain inflammation and has no antioxidant effect, EVOO was seen to increase antioxidant levels and decrease inflammation.

EVOO’s effect on Alzheimer’s is worth emphasizing. Kaddoumi told Greek Liquid Gold that in two studies her team has found that “EVOO was able to reduce and reverse AD-related pathology.” Moreover, mice eating oleocanthal-rich EVOO “showed significant improvement in memory and cognitive function when compared to mice that consumed refined olive oil. Thus, these results suggest that EVOO by itself is effective against Alzheimer’s disease. This is significant because the results suggest that besides EVOO’s ability to reduce AD risk, it could also treat AD and/or hold or slow its progression.”

The mice in the recent study received “The Governor” brand of EVOO from Greece, which is unusually high in oleocanthal(680 mg/kg). Donated by its producers, the Dafnis family, this monovarietal Lianolia olive oil from Corfu received a Gold Award from the Olympia Health and Nutrition Awards in 2016 because it contained the highest level of oleocanthal discovered on the world market (with 565 olive oils tested for those awards alone).

Spyros Dafnis tells Greek Liquid Gold he considers his family’s work producing olive oil for scientific research both a blessing and a responsibility. He thinks of their olive oil’s citation in international scientific literature as both a great success and “only the beginning.” They work very hard year-round, combining tradition with technological innovation and scientific research for a “very strict harvest and production process every year.” That process led to “the first single-variety olive oil from the centuries-old Lianolia variety of Corfu in the global market” as well as “one of the first EVOOs in the world to add the ‘health claim’ report to its label” in 2013.

Dr. Prokopis Magiatis of the University of Athens told Ta Nea newspaper that it remains to be seen “whether the great results of American research will also be valid for the human body.” He added that "an initial response” to that question will come from “the first international clinical trial in patients with early Alzheimer's symptoms using olive oil rich in oleocanthal,” which has been underway for almost a year in Greece and should yield some results this year.

Magiatis, who has spent years “trying to highlight the role of olive oil in protecting the health and thus to increase its economic value," also mentioned to Ta Nea that the study results should be valid for all Greek olive oil that is very rich in oleocanthal, providing “the best answer to those who for years considered olive oil a simple food with limited economic value.”

WRITTEN BY LISA RADINOVSKY from Greek Liquid Gold

Original Article here
urn:store:6:blog:post:36https://www.elenianna.co.uk/pasta-with-heirloom-tomatoes-olives-olive-oilPasta with Heirloom Tomatoes, Olives and Olive Oil
Serves:5

500 g pasta of your choice

10 heirloom tomatoes, halved

2 cups Navarino Icons Olives, drained and pitted

1 cup Greek feta, coarsely grated

1 cup Navarino Icons Estate Grown Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Navarino Icons Sea Salt with rosemary

Pepper

Cook pasta in salted water and drain. Here's how to adopt the Mediterranean diet.

If you're looking for a heart-healthy eating plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you.

The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eating — plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of red wine — among other components characterizing the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Most healthy diets include fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, and limit unhealthy fats. While these parts of a healthy diet are tried-and-true, subtle variations or differences in proportions of certain foods may make a difference in your risk of heart disease.

Benefits of the Mediterranean diet
Research has shown that the traditional Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of heart disease. The diet has been associated with a lower level of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the "bad" cholesterol that's more likely to build up deposits in your arteries.

In fact, a meta-analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality as well as overall mortality.

The Mediterranean diet is also associated with a reduced incidence of cancer, and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer.

For these reasons, most if not all major scientific organizations encourage healthy adults to adapt a style of eating like that of the Mediterranean diet for prevention of major chronic diseases.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes:

Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts
Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods
Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month
Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week
Enjoying meals with family and friends
Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)
Getting plenty of exercise

Fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains

The Mediterranean diet traditionally includes fruits, vegetables, pasta and rice. For example, residents of Greece eat very little red meat and average nine servings a day of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

Grains in the Mediterranean region are typically whole grain and usually contain very few unhealthy trans fats, and bread is an important part of the diet there. However, throughout the Mediterranean region, bread is eaten plain or dipped in olive oil — not eaten with butter or margarines, which contain saturated or trans fats.

Nuts are another part of a healthy Mediterranean diet. Nuts are high in fat (approximately 80 percent of their calories come from fat), but most of the fat is not saturated. Because nuts are high in calories, they should not be eaten in large amounts — generally no more than a handful a day. Avoid candied or honey-roasted and heavily salted nuts.

Healthy fats
The focus of the Mediterranean diet isn't on limiting total fat consumption, but rather to make wise choices about the types of fat you eat. The Mediterranean diet discourages saturated fats and hydrogenated oils (trans fats), both of which contribute to heart disease.

The Mediterranean diet features olive oil as the primary source of fat. Olive oil provides monounsaturated fat — a type of fat that can help reduce LDL cholesterol levels when used in place of saturated or trans fats.

"Extra-virgin" and "virgin" olive oils — the least processed forms — also contain the highest levels of the protective plant compounds that provide antioxidant effects.

Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, such as canola oil and some nuts, contain the beneficial linolenic acid (a type of omega-3 fatty acid). Omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, decrease blood clotting, are associated with decreased sudden heart attack, improve the health of your blood vessels, and help moderate blood pressure.

Fatty fish — such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon — are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish is eaten on a regular basis in the Mediterranean diet.

Wine
The health effects of alcohol have been debated for many years, and some doctors are reluctant to encourage alcohol consumption because of the health consequences of excessive drinking.

However, alcohol — in moderation — has been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease in some research studies.

The Mediterranean diet typically includes a moderate amount of wine. This means no more than 5 ounces (148 milliliters) of wine daily for women (or men over age 65), and no more than 10 ounces (296 milliliters) of wine daily for men under age 65.

If you're unable to limit your alcohol intake to the amounts defined above, if you have a personal or family history of alcohol abuse, or if you have heart or liver disease, refrain from drinking wine or any other alcohol.

Putting it all together
The Mediterranean diet is a delicious and healthy way to eat. Many people who switch to this style of eating say they'll never eat any other way. Here are some specific steps to get you started:

Eat your veggies and fruits — and switch to whole grains. An abundance and variety of plant foods should make up the majority of your meals. Strive for seven to 10 servings a day of veggies and fruits. Switch to whole-grain bread and cereal, and begin to eat more whole-grain rice and pasta products.
Go nuts. Keep almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts on hand for a quick snack. Choose natural peanut butter, rather than the kind with hydrogenated fat added. Try tahini (blended sesame seeds) as a dip or spread for bread.
Pass on the butter. Try olive or canola oil as a healthy replacement for butter or margarine. Use it in cooking. Dip bread in flavored olive oil or lightly spread it on whole-grain bread for a tasty alternative to butter. Or try tahini as a dip or spread.
Spice it up. Herbs and spices make food tasty and are also rich in health-promoting substances. Season your meals with herbs and spices rather than salt.
Go fish. Eat fish once or twice a week. Fresh or water-packed tuna, salmon, trout, mackerel and herring are healthy choices. Grilled fish tastes good and requires little cleanup. Avoid fried fish, unless it's sauteed in a small amount of canola oil.
Rein in the red meat. Substitute fish and poultry for red meat. When eaten, make sure it's lean and keep portions small (about the size of a deck of cards). Also avoid sausage, bacon and other high-fat meats.
Choose low-fat dairy. This, combined with low levels of antioxidant enzymes and high oxygen use in the central nervous system, leads to more oxidative damage that is thought to play a key role in such diseases.

Since the 1940s an herbicide known as 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), has been widely used in agriculture and forestry industries, which humans and animals are frequently exposed to through “contaminated air, drinking water, soil and foodstuff or during production of the herbicide.” 2,4-D has been shown to have neurotoxic effects due to the generation of free radicals.

The study suggests that the biological actions of phenols in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the brain, with the ability to scavenge ROS. These phenols have been shown in various studies to have neuroprotective effects against, not only Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, but cerebral ischemia, spinal cord injury, Huntington’s disease and peripheral neuropathy.

The aim of this rat study in particular, was to establish if EVOO had effects on 2,4-D induced oxidative stress. Using rat brain slices, the researchers had three different groups, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), olive oil extracting the hydrophilic fractions (OOHF) and olive oil extracting the lipophilic fractions (OOLF). They tested lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence systems with a particular focus on brain lipid profile and fatty acid composition.

After 4 weeks of exposure to 2,4-D treatment, the brain weight of the rats decreased along with AChE activities – an indicator of cell membrane damage. The brains also displayed a decrease in membrane PUFA contents. Both the EVOO and OOLF groups presented with the same fatty acid composition, 17 percent saturated fatty acids, 65 percent monounsaturated, 15 percent PUFA. The changes induced to the brain via pesticide exposure were all counteracted with the addition of EVOO or it’s fractions, restoring brain weight and stimulating AChE activity.

In addition, supplementing with the EVOO also restored antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation to normal levels. The PUFA levels were also restored to normal, especially DHA levels, providing an observable neuroprotective effect of EVOO. ROS reduced in the brain also.

The study suggests that the beneficial effects of EVOO are due to its high antioxidant substances and monounsaturated fatty acids.

Though this is only a study in rats, early data suggests that EVOO could be a natural protective agent against acute 2,4-D neurotoxicity exposure. And while more research is needed, the authors suggest EVOO could be a therapeutic strategy to protect against, not only 2,4-D exposure, but other types of pesticide exposure that contribute to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and increased oxidative stress.

Sources: www.oliveoiltimes.com
urn:store:6:blog:post:28https://www.elenianna.co.uk/happy-new-year-2018-greetings-wishes-importance-and-significanceHappy New Year 2018: Greetings, Wishes
New Year celebrations differ across countries and cultures, but some things remain the same. Apart from the parties, most people celebrate the beginning of a new year by calling up family and friends, mending quarrels, setting goals for self-betterment and donating to charity.

The celebration of New Year dates back centuries. Perhaps the first known instance of celebrating the advent of a new year was instituted in 2000 BC in Mesopotamia. Today, in many countries, New Year's Day, also called New Year's or New Year, is observed on January 1, which is the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian as well as the Julian calendar. New Year's has become probably the most widely-celebrated holiday worldwide. It is brought in at the stroke of midnight on December 31 in different time zones, often with fireworks and parties. December 31, known as New Year's Eve, is celebrated with much pomp and fervour. New Year celebrations differ across countries and cultures, but some things remain the same. Apart from the fanfare and parties, most people celebrate the beginning of a new year by calling up family and friends, mending quarrels, setting goals for self-betterment and donating to charity. It is a significant holiday as many consider it the start of not just a new year but also an opportunity to start on a clean slate. The New Year brings with it new hopes, new possibilities and new dreams - and is therefore a happy occasion that is brought in with parties, get-togethers and joyous celebrations. People set goals, known as new year resolutions, in order to achieve targets they have set for themselves.

Happy New Year 2018: Significance of New Year's

In some cultures, New Year's Day has a religious or spiritual significance. It is now celebrated around the time of the winter solstice, where the days begin to lengthen again. New Year's therefore represents a time for rebirth - of moving ahead and forgetting the past.

In Ecuador, in fact, people make straw dummies and burn them to signify getting rid of the past.

In India, New Year's Day has several variations depending on the region and is based on the Hindu calendar.

Happy New Year 2018: Importance of New Year's

Each year, around the globe, New Year's Day is celebrated with great fervour and merrymaking. A new year marks a new beginning. You can celebrate the beginning of 2018 by setting goals for yourself, making resolutions for self-betterment, spending time with your family and giving back to society.

We wish you and your loved ones a very happy New Year 2018!
urn:store:6:blog:post:24https://www.elenianna.co.uk/mediterranean-diets-go-mainstreamMEDITERRANEAN DIETS GO MAINSTREAM

Today we hear a lot about the Mediterranean diet. UNESCO, the cultural arm of the United Nations, has proclaimed the Mediterranean diet one of civilization’s great treasures. But which Mediterranean diet? There are sixteen countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. I’ve been to most of them for extended periods of time, and I can tell you that there is no single Mediterranean diet.

What is eaten in Spain is very different from that eaten in Italy, and what is consumed in Italy is distinct from the diet in Greece, not to mention the other 13 countries in the region. If you ask most Americans for their definition of the Mediterranean diet, the response is usually eating pasta (and pizza), drinking red wine, using a little olive oil, drinking espresso, and adding some parmesan cheese to their meals. But that American version doesn’t look anything like the real Mediterranean diet. If you eat that way—and think you’re cutting your risk of heart disease and helping your body shed fat—it’s time to rethink.

THE REAL MEDITERRANEAN MIRACLE

There is no definitive caloric composition that makes up “the Mediterranean diet.” The best that researchers can do is to estimate adherence to food groups they think should be in the Mediterranean diet. A good guess is that about 60% of the calories in the Mediterranean diet are consumed as carbohydrates, 15% as protein, and about 35% as fat, which would make the Mediterranean diet close in macronutrient composition to the current American diet.

Let me say that again: When it comes to carbs, protein, and fat, the Mediterranean diet is almost identical to what the average American eats.

So why is it seemingly so much healthier? One word: polyphenols. The distinguishing feature of the diets in virtually every region that borders the Mediterranean Sea is not pasta but vegetables and fruits. We finally have enough scientific sophistication to realize that it’s the high levels of polyphenols—micronutrients that act as powerful anti-inflammatory agents—that make the Mediterranean diet unique. If you look at the Mediterranean food groups carefully, they usually fall into two broad categories: those rich in polyphenols (fruits, vegetables, wine) eaten in large quantities and those, such as red meat, chicken, and eggs, that are not great sources of polyphenols—and are eaten less frequently.

Furthermore, it is implicit that the fat in the Mediterranean diet is generally rich in monounsaturated fats (from olive oil and nuts), moderate in omega-3 fats (coming from fish), and low in omega-6 and saturated fats (from corn oil and red meat). Foods rich in polyphenols, monounsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids and low in omega-6 and saturated fats may well explain why, despite having a similar ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to the current American diet, the Mediterranean diet is so much more effective at preventing disease and promoting longevity.

source:http://www.mensfitness.com/

urn:store:6:blog:post:21https://www.elenianna.co.uk/nature-knows-how-to-treat-most-skin-irritationsNature knows how to treat most skin irritations

An increasing amount of people is nowadays aware of the long-term effects of many bath and beauty ingredients. So, there is no wonder why there is a strong demand for natural, organic and safer solutions.

Just as we prefer to eat pure, natural and organic food so should we use the purest and most natural products to treat our skin (although the term ‘natural’ is not always an indication of safety).

With this thought in mind, a young couple from Greece searched for a solution to treat their children’s everyday skin issues. Tilia Beeswax ointment is the result of this research. It is a 100% natural product that combines skin irritations’ treatment with cosmetic use, produced in a certified Laboratory and approved by the National Organization for Medicines (EOF), according to the EU regulations.

It has a wide variety of uses: skin rashes, diaper rash, dehydration, burns, chapped or rough skin.

The initial idea of the product is not new. The combination of bio extra virgin olive oil and pure beeswax has been used through centuries for both cosmetic and therapeutic care of face and body.

Beeswax is a non toxic, complex, mixture of organic elements, mainly esters, fatty oxids and hydrocarbons. It’s also rich in proteins, vitamin A and minerals with antiphlogistic, calmative, anti-inflammatory, cicatrizant, demulcent, moisturizing properties. It doesn’t block skin’s pores.

Olive oil -especially bio extra virgin cold pressed olive oil-differs from any other kind of oil because of the high content of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and secondly because of the beneficial characteristics of the rest of the ingredients, that either they don’t appear at all or they appear in smaller amounts in other kinds of oils. Olive oil has nourishing, moisturizing, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cicatrizant properties.

In order to create an ointment with excellent quality and effectiveness, raw material selection is very important. In Tilia Beeswax Ointment these raw materials are being selected by one provider only. Beeswax has undergone no chemical process neither has it been mixed with other artificial ingredients. Also through a mild process of preparation, the raw materials of Tilia Beeswax Ointment maintain the highest levels of their beneficial attributes.

For more information or to buy Tilia product press here

urn:store:6:blog:post:20https://www.elenianna.co.uk/who-should-follow-the-mediterranean-dietWho should follow the Mediterranean diet?

The answer to the question, ‘’Who should follow the Mediterranean diet?’’ is: Everyone. Every single person should follow a healthy diet so that he or she would be healthy in body and in mind. You should remember that you do not follow a diet because it is a fashion or because you want to lose fast a couple of pounds. You follow a diet, because you want to have a healthy living. A diet is a way of living and Mediterranean diet has been such a diet. It has been the way of living for millions of people in the Mediterranean Sea and this kind of living has been ‘’discovered’’ recently by dieticians and nutritionists around the world, who now encourage people to follow it.

Is Mediterranean diet more suited for certain people? The answer is No. Mediterranean diet is for all people of all ages, races, and nationalities. It is as healthy for a white woman in Canada as for a Chinese man in Australia. Following the Mediterranean diet we get protection from the sun, we get protected from cancer and it helps us fight diabetes and other chronic diseases. Mediterranean diet is also good and ssuitable for Vegetarians. Med diet is not a manmade diet. It is a diet which has matured through the years so that it would serve the tastes and needs of the nations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Women should follow the Mediterranean diet. Why? A recent Harvard study has shown that women who have adopted the Mediterranean diet and way of living, live longer and without disease! The study followed the dietary habits of about 10 thousand women who were in their fifties and sixties, 50s and 60s for 15 years. The results were amazing! Women, who followed the Mediterranean diet, eating lots of fruits and vegetables and other Mediterranean food, were more likely to reach their 70s healthy and free of chronic diseases like heart diseases and diabetes. The percentages and ratios were in favor of the Med diet and this is no surprise to most of us and it is certainly another piece of convincing data and supporting data in our efforts to convince the unconvinced!
urn:store:6:blog:post:18https://www.elenianna.co.uk/natural-sea-salt-perfect-for-seasoning-the-finest-gourmet-dishes-and-heightening-tasteNatural Sea Salt, Perfect For Seasoning the Finest Gourmet Dishes and Heightening Taste

If you watch chefs prepare their delectable offerings, one thing you will notice is that invariably they use natural sea salt as seasoning. There is a good reason. Natural sea salt is obtained evaporating ocean water that contains salt and other chemicals such as potassium and iodine salts. Apart from that an interesting fact is that sea water salt content is similar to the salt content in human blood and cells, making out a good case for using only natural sea salt, and not table or processed salts, as being good for health. You may or may not know it but table salt is processed and has additives like aluminum salts and potassium iodide. Aluminum causes kidney disorders and brain damage. Natural sea salt contains nicely balanced iron, sulphur, iodine and magnesium apart from sodium chloride in the right proportions. It is actually preferred if you care about your health.

Blessed with abundant sunshine and a large number of islands, Greece has an ancient tradition of making natural sea salt from the purest ocean water. If asked for their preference of naturally produced salt from ocean waters, chefs are more than likely to choose Greek sea salts. Sea salt has a distinguishing taste according to the region from where it is collected. You can buy French or Italian sea salt but it is not quite in the same class as naturally harvested sea salt of Greece. Sea salt is traditionally harvested from natural cavities after the seawater evaporates. It is washed in water and dried. Some makers of organic sea salt may even add choice herbs like thyme or rosemary to confer a unique flavor.

The proof, however, is in the eating. Simply get yourself a small bag of Navarino natural sea salt and prepare your favorite dish or with Terroir Wild Sea Salt.
